| Abstract | Blue-green algal blooms are currently costing $800,000 per year in the Glenelg River Vic catchment. A draft nutrient management plan is presented which was developed to reduce the incidence of blue- green algae blooms in the catchment through decreasing nutrient inputs into surface waters. The nutrient reduction activities recommended include dryland agriculture (gully erosion control, stream protection, farm nutrient management), forests (code of forest practices), urban areas ( community education, upgrading of sewerage and other municipal works), research and investigation, monitoring and a coordination program. Based on cost sharing guidelines, the costs of implementing the action plans as well as the benefits to be gained are also presented. |
