| Abstract | As a result of an enquiry into the environmental effects of the proposed relocation of the Coode Island Chemical Storage Complex from Port Melbourne to Point Lillias Vic, a study was undertaken to assess the wetland values of waterbird habitats within the Werribee to Avalon region. The study area was found to be very important for the two highly mobile groups of waterbirds, migratory waders and ducks. Parts of the area are also used by major populations of two migratory species, the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot and the double banded plover. Many species in the area depend greatly on human management of their habitats and a change from the prevailing regime could result in the desertion of large numbers of waterbirds from a favoured habitat. Habitats were variously rated as of regional, State and national significance, including some of international significance which should be considered for inclusion in the Ramsar listing. |
