Abstract Nineteen species of water beetles were caught in 24 saline lakes near Colac Vic, with Megaporus howitti, Necterosoma penicillatum and Enochrus nr andersoni the most widespread. Few species apparently breed in the lakes. There was only a loose inverse relationship between salinity and species richness partly because of habitat differences between lakes. Species richness and salinity ranges are about the same as for water beetles in North American saline lakes, but Australian species are endemic and the genera different (A).
