Abstract The first 10 years of the development of Ballarat Vic, from 1851 to 1862 are highlighted, during which there was a great demand for water but no assured supply. Following the discovery of gold in July 1851 the population reached some 6000 at the diggings by Sept, and water was required to wash the mined material. The sequence of events in developing the town's first temporary water supply is discussed, involving conflict between the 2 separate municipalities, West and East. This first supply began operation on 14 December 1858, from Yuille's Swamp (now Lake Wendouree). The first permanent supply was completed by December 1862 from Kirk's Dam at Yarrowee Creek.
