Abstract

The study examines the environment and land capability in the Shire of Bungaree. The land was categorised into twelve land units, most of which were land systems consisting of repeating patterns of land components.
The land components of each land system were rated for their ability to support four main types of subdivision:-
 URBAN
SMALL FARMLETS (about 4 ha)
LARGE FARMLETS (greater than 16 ha) BUSH BLOCKS
Broadly, the most common types of land fall into two categories. These are:-
(1) The land systems Or and Qbm which comprise the red "potato" soils on basalt and tend to be rated "good" for many uses including cultivation.
(2) The Ordovician country (Land systems Orb, Orr, Org & Ors) which tends to be rated fair to poor for most uses depending on slope and position in the topography. The soils here are generally poorer and more erodible.
In this shire, much of the Ordovician land remains under forest as Crown Land and Reserve Forest. The rest is generally grazing land.
Additionally, there are areas of flat, poorly drained alluvium to the north of Ballarat (Qap); areas of alluvium along watercourses (Qya); hills and gentle slopes on granite (Dgn); and old volcanic cones (Qvc), stony rises (Qbs) and small areas of yellow grey soil (Qbg) on the basalt.
The study is for broad scale planning only. Individual cases will still quire site inspection. More detailed component mapping for areas of interest can be provided.
