| Abstract | In Victoria, steps are being taken to control organochlorine inputs to open coastal water in order to protect marine life and seafood quality. The Victorian Environment Protection Authority is currently assessing three potential ocean inputs: the Maryvale pulp mill and the proposed East Gippsland mill, both of which may discharge to ocean, and the existing ocean discharge of domestic and industrial wastes from the Geelong region. Some toxicants, probably organochlorines, are present at sublethal concentrations even after secondary treatment of the Maryvale effluent. A comprehensive monitoring program detects toxic impact, tainting and organochlorine bioaccumulation. Predictive studies on the effects of organochlorines on local marine systems will feature prominently in the approvals process (A). |
