Abstract

The topography of the Western Basalt Plains of Victoria is composed of undulating flat landscapes that cover a large area of western Victoria, in a region spreading from between Port Phillip Bay and Kilmore westward to Haywood near the South Australian border, bounded approximately by Beaufort in the north, and Colac and Warrnambool in the south. This report comprises of a list of common plants found in the Western Basalt Plains of Victoria, Although this region is generally classified as a grassland dominated by tussock forming grasses such as Kangaroo Grass (Themeda sp.), Wallaby Grass (Danthonia spp.) and Spear Grass (Stipa spp.) the characteristic floristic composition also includes wetland, shrub and herb-rich woodland communities that in summer proliferate in colourful flowers.
