Abstract A brief history of Geelong Vic documents the centre's development from the first European visitations in the early 1800s to the thriving centre it is today. The first official settlement in the areas was established in 1837 although there had been sporadic informal settlements prior to that date. The settlement was gazetted as a town in October 1838. The township endured many periods of both flourishing growth and decline during the gold rush, the great wars and the depression. In 2003, Geelong had a population of 180,000 and a sufficient presence as a major regional force in Australia characterised by a diverse economy, and high workforce participation rates (A).
