| Abstract |
Summary information on the ecological and management related features of Australia's most significant wetlands is presented with the aim of combating ignorance, one of the major factors threatening wetlands. A total of 698 nationally important wetlands are identified in this edition, expanding the number in the first edition by about 25%. As well as including new inventory work, information gaps for individual sites in the first edition have been addressed. A simplified set of criteria for including sites has been used in conjunction with a wetland classification system based on that adopted by the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) but modified for Australian conditions. Notable alterations to the Ramsar system include the addition of non- tidal freshwater forested wetlands, rock pools and karst systems. |
